Custard filled Tortes

I made a couple cakes for the boys' b-day today; but was looking for something different - saving a sicky sweet frosting for their friend party cakes in a couple weeks. I baked one yellow & one chocolate, each in a 17" jelly roll pan/oversized cookie sheet. When cooled, I cut each one into 3 equal 5.6" sections so I could layer them into rectangular tortes.

I made a vanilla custard and a chocolate custard and layered it warm between the 2nd and 3rd layers, and on top. I kept one cake all vanilla and the other all chocolate. I have had them assembled in the fridge since 10:30 this morning.... and will be making some whipped cream in an hour or so, to use as icing. I will refrigerate the frosted cakes again, before serving. The whipped cream probably won't keep very long after we cut into the cakes... but it will be so yummy.

If they were for company... I may have have included fresh cut strawberries, raspberries or kiwi (for vanilla cake) with the custard.... maybe even crushed candies, cookies or ?? I'll let you know how they came out~

Yes, thank you - yhey are 10(!) today. Crazy~

The cakes are pretty boring looking... all frosted with whipped cream. I may throw a splash of color on them, with some leftover frosting from when I made cupcakes for Cub Scouts...write Happy Birthday on them, or something.
